What you should know

The City of Prescott, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has completed a comprehensive Map Revision of the flood hazard area along creeks in Prescott and surrounding portions of Yavapai County.

The new flood maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps, will become effective March 6, 2018. These maps help property owners better understand their current flood risk and make informed decisions about how to protect family and property in the event of a flood. 

Am I affected?

To see your current flood risk, follow the property search instructions below.

Property Search Instructions

1. Click the “Property Search Tool” button below to open the Flood Hazard Mapping web program.

2. Type the parcel number or home address of your property in the search bar located in the top left corner.

3. Click the “Search” button to zoom in on your property.

4. Once you've found your property, click the “Layers” tab. 

5. Within the “Layers” tab, select the “Flood Information” drop-down tab.

6. Select the checkbox that reads “Turn all Layers On/Off” and make sure all boxes are unchecked.

7. Select the checkbox that reads “Proposed Flood Hazard Zones”.

8. Use the “Map Legend” to identify your flood zone designation.  

Will I need flood insurance?

If you find that your property will now be in a high-risk flood zone (e.g., Zone A, AE) based on the new maps, most lenders will require flood insurance when they become effective. If you do not purchase the insurance within 45 days after being informed by your lender of this requirement, your lender is federally required to obtain insurance and charge you for the amount (which could be much more expensive). Even if you don't have a loan, you are still strongly encouraged to carry flood insurance.

The City of Prescott and Yavapai County do not provide insurance, however, we want to help you understand your flood insurance options.

Are there low cost insurance options?

If your property is newly identified to be at high risk, you may qualify for a lower-cost rating option through the federally-supported National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). If a policy is bought within the first 12 months after the map's effective date, the NFIP provides savings by allowing lower-cost Preferred Risk Policy (PRP) rates to be used. Premiums will then increase no more than 18 percent each year. Additional savings can be had if the PRP is purchased and effective before the maps become effective. Additionally, FEMA highly recommends that property owners purchase a PRP prior to the maps becoming effective to aid in any future sale of the property.
